Our ALN Vision

The school ensures that all children are included as full members of the school community, and as a result receive appropriate educational provision of a high standard and access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. An attempt is made to identify pupils who have difficulties early on, targeting relevant support. Before placing a child on the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) register we will always ask for the consent of the parents/guardians, and where appropriate, ask for the child’s opinion.

If you have any concerns about your child’s progress—whether academic, social, emotional, or developmental—your first step should be to speak with their class teacher. They will be able to offer guidance and, if needed, work with Miss Evans to explore further support options.

The school provides for pupils with additional learning needs through the following methods:

Inclusive Learning Provision

At Ysgol Dyffryn Aeron, we are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all pupils. Our classrooms are dyslexia-friendly, with carefully considered layouts, resources, and teaching strategies that support a wide range of learning styles. Staff are trained to support a variety of additional learning needs, ensuring that every child feels valued and supported. Teacher deliver differentiated teaching in mixed ability classes, tailoring lessons to meet the diverse needs of learners. This approach allows all pupils to access the curriculum at an appropriate level, while being challenged and encouraged to reach their full potential. We use a variety of teaching methods and resources to ensure that learning is engaging, accessible, and inclusive for everyone.

Additional Learning Provision – Targeted Interventions

As part of our ALN provision, we offer a range of targeted interventions delivered in small groups by trained Teaching Assistants. These interventions are available to pupils who meet the criteria and are delivered in the school’s main language – Welsh – ensuring consistency and comfort for our learners.

Miss Ffion Evans is the school’s Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo).

Our Intervention Areas Include:

  • Literacy Support – to boost reading, spelling and comprehension skills.
  • Mathematics Support – to strengthen numeracy and problem-solving abilities.
  • Wellbeing Support – to promote emotional resilience and positive mental health.
  • Concentration Support – helping children develop focus and attention strategies.
  • Speech and Language Support – to aid communication and language development.

These sessions are designed to help children build confidence, develop essential skills, and make progress at their own pace in a nurturing and supportive setting.

We also have a member of the Governing Body that has responsibility for Additional Learning Needs, and we work closely with Special Education Advisory teachers and other external specialists to make sure we’re doing the best we can for every pupil.
